The diverse culinary nature of edgy Merivale chef Dan Hong provided us with the perfect inspiration for this annual (but ever changing) event. Producing an intricate, bespoke experience, we created three very unique dining spaces, encapsulating the juxtaposition of Hong’s traditional family heritage and current edgy style.
The arrival area drew inspiration from the timeless colonial furnishings and traditional Asian finishes of Hong’s restaurant Mr Wong, paying homage to his classic Chinese influences in a contemporary style. An insitu dumpling bar saw Dan steaming up a storm, live cooking for guests. It was in the dining room that some of the finer details of Hong’s personality really shone through. Whether it was referencing Dan’s obsession with sneakers through our creative use of shoelaces, or hand painting a bold, edgy carpet to reflect his individual style, we created a monochromatic, high end ‘street’ dining hall where guests enjoyed a modern Asian influenced menu.
Pops of colour and the illumination of a custom made neon sign lured guests into the dessert bar, tapping into Dan’s quirky and contemporary side and finishing the night on a playful note.
